Ott Tanak secured victory at the Central European Rally on Sunday, keeping his championship hopes alive as the season heads into its final leg in Japan next month. This win marked Tanak's second of the season, following his success in Sardinia in June. His teammate at Hyundai, Thierry Neuville, who finished third in the rally, leads the 2024 championship standings with a 25-point advantage over Tanak, putting him in a strong position to potentially clinch his first WRC title.
Neuville's chances to wrap up the championship early were hindered when he spun into a ditch during Saturday's stage, costing him valuable time. Meanwhile, the rally saw other top contenders face their own challenges. Eight-time former champion Sébastien Ogier crashed his Toyota into an electricity pole during the 17th stage while trailing Tanak by a mere 1.5 seconds, further opening the door for Tanak to take control of the race.
Reflecting on his win, Tanak emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean performance after Ogier's crash, allowing him to focus on securing points. Neuville described the weekend as "challenging" and expressed disappointment over not being able to clinch the title but acknowledged that mistakes can happen to anyone, even champions. He remains optimistic about his comfortable lead heading into the final rally in Japan, expressing gratitude to his team while recognizing the difficulties faced during the event.
