Oscar Piastri achieved a childhood dream on Sunday by securing his first Formula One victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, amidst a whirlwind of emotions and team orders that led to a McLaren one-two finish. Piastri, starting from second place, initially took the lead by overtaking pole-sitter and teammate Lando Norris. However, Norris managed to gain an advantage after the pit stops, briefly leading the race before yielding the position back to Piastri under team orders.
McLaren’s strategy involved pitting Piastri first to undercut seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, who ultimately finished third. Norris, with a faster pace, inherited the lead but was instructed to relinquish it to Piastri, who was struggling to close the gap. After tense communication over team radio, Norris complied with the order, allowing Piastri to pass with three laps remaining despite the impact on his championship standings.
Piastri reflected on his win as a dream come true, despite the complicated finish. He expressed that the team executed their strategy effectively, placing him in the right position from the start. Although his pace in the final stint wasn’t as strong as desired, he felt the outcome was justified and the team’s approach was correct.
Norris acknowledged the emotional difficulty of surrendering the win but accepted the decision as fair, recognizing Piastri’s deserving performance. Despite the personal setback, Norris praised the overall achievement and the collaborative effort that led to McLaren's dominant result. Hamilton finished third after surviving a collision with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who recovered to finish fifth, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz taking fourth and sixth respectively.
