Oscar Piastri Set for Victory Bid at Azerbaijan GP as Norris Struggles in Qualifying

Oscar Piastri is poised to challenge for victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after securing a front-row start in qualifying, while his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, struggled and will begin the race in 17th. The race's buildup saw McLaren reacting to their previous performance in Italy, where both drivers dominated qualifying but ultimately lost out to Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Although Norris is second in the overall standings and Piastri had initially agreed to assist him, team orders are unlikely to play a role this weekend due to Norris's setback in qualifying.

 

Piastri expressed optimism about his chances, acknowledging the strong competition from Ferrari but emphasizing McLaren's solid race pace. With Leclerc starting on pole and Carlos Sainz in third, Piastri is ready for an exciting race. He confirmed that he has the green light to push for a win, saying, "We can be very optimistic from where we're starting. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do tomorrow."

 

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised Piastri for his impressive performance, highlighting his ability to seize the moment. Stella noted that Piastri's second-place start behind Leclerc, a known specialist on this track, demonstrated both the car's competitiveness and the Australian driver's maturity. However, Stella also acknowledged the disappointment of Norris's qualifying result, stressing the team's determination to help him recover and score points.
