Organisers of the Australian Grand Prix Open an Inquiry Following a Crowd Invasion on The Racetrack

Posted : 16 April 2023
The Australian Grand Prix organizers have launched an investigation to determine how a group of spectators breached security went dangerously close to Formula 1 cars on Sunday during the turbulent race that had three red flags.

The intrusion onto the Albert Park course before the checkered flag, according to Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) Chief Executive Andrew Westacott, may have caused significant casualties.

After a delayed rolling start behind a safety car, Red Bull's Max Verstappen won his maiden Australian GP championship. Only 12 of the 20 starters finished the race.
"There's a controlled allowance of people to come onto the track after the race has concluded and after the safety car passes," Westacott told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
"Spectators had broken one of the lines, we don't know how that's occurred just yet.
"Motorsport is dangerous ... it could have been horrific.

"We've got a lot of CCTV and we've got a huge amount of footage we're going to have to pour through over the next couple of weeks.
"Nobody does anything malicious at motorsport, it's an unbelievably well-behaved crowd but they, I think, had a degree of confusion. We don't know how they got into the area without the right level of authority."

444,631 spectators attended the Australian Grand Prix over the course of four days, including 131,124 on Sunday, an event record. However, pictures of fans scaling high safety barriers and squeezing through a gap in the barricades to get access to the track surfaced after the race.

On Sunday night, race organizers appeared before the stewards and acknowledged to a charge of failing to take necessary safety and security precautions.
