Ferrari reserve driver Oliver Bearman will step in for the suspended Kevin Magnussen at Haas for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix next week. Haas confirmed the 19-year-old Briton, who is expected to race full-time for the team next season alongside Esteban Ocon, will partner Nico Hulkenberg for the weekend. Bearman previously made his Formula 1 debut for Ferrari in March, finishing seventh as a substitute for Carlos Sainz, who had undergone surgery for appendicitis.
Magnussen incurred a one-race suspension after reaching 12 penalty points on his super licence during the Italian Grand Prix. He will return for the Singapore race with a clean slate. Bearman acknowledged the challenges of stepping in as a reserve driver with limited preparation time but expressed confidence in his previous experience, having substituted earlier this year and participated in four practice sessions with Haas. He plans to draw on this experience to navigate the full race weekend in Baku.
Haas, currently seventh in the constructor standings, trails Red Bull-owned RB by six points and leads Alpine by 15 points. Team principal Ayao Komatsu expressed excitement over Bearman's opportunity to race alongside Hulkenberg for the entire weekend in Azerbaijan, emphasizing the value of Hulkenberg's experience as a reference for the young driver. Komatsu highlighted the potential benefits of this collaboration for both Bearman and the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Bearman, who has demonstrated potential during his practice sessions with Haas, is eager to make the most of this chance to gain more race experience. The young Briton aims to prove his readiness for a full-time F1 role, building on his previous successes and the valuable mentorship of Hulkenberg throughout the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend.
