Norris Tops Singapore GP Practice as Verstappen Struggles, McLaren Faces Rear Wing Scrutiny

Posted : 21 September 2024

Lando Norris topped the timesheets for McLaren in the second practice for the Singapore Grand Prix, leading Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Norris, who sits 59 points behind Max Verstappen in the drivers' standings, set the fastest lap under the Marina Bay Circuit's night conditions, crucial for race preparation. Verstappen struggled in his Red Bull, finishing 15th and trailing Norris by 1.294 seconds, citing poor grip and excessive sliding throughout the session. Despite the challenges, Norris expressed optimism, calling it a solid start to the weekend.

Verstappen's frustrations extended beyond the track, as he was reprimanded earlier in the day for using inappropriate language during a press conference. His Red Bull lacked the usual grip, leaving him significantly off the pace. Meanwhile, Leclerc, who was fastest in the first practice, finished second with a time just 0.058 seconds behind Norris, while Sainz, last year's Singapore winner, was six-tenths slower than his teammate. Leclerc acknowledged the need for further improvements, especially in finding the right balance for qualifying.

The second McLaren, driven by Oscar Piastri, finished fifth, just behind Yuki Tsunoda's much-improved RB, with Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull in sixth. George Russell’s Mercedes and Sergio Perez's Red Bull were among the top 10, with Russell suffering a minor crash late in the session. Lewis Hamilton, a four-time winner in Singapore, struggled to find pace, finishing 11th, and expressed concern about failing to make it into Q3 for qualifying. Despite several set-up changes, Hamilton felt nothing worked in improving his performance.

McLaren also made headlines off the track, agreeing to modify their controversial rear wing after other teams, particularly Red Bull, raised concerns over its legality. Though the FIA had declared the wing compliant with regulations, McLaren proactively offered to make minor adjustments following discussions with the governing body. The team emphasized that their rear wing passed all deflection tests, and they expected similar scrutiny to be applied to other teams regarding their rear wings' compliance.
