Norris Fastest in Bahrain as Power Outage Disrupts F1 Testing

Posted : 27 February 2025

McLaren's Lando Norris topped the timesheets on the first day of pre-season testing in Bahrain, despite a power outage that disrupted the session. The blackout, caused by an external substation failure, forced an hour-long extension into the evening after garages were left in darkness. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc had led the session before the interruption, while Mercedes' Italian rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli set the morning pace.

Engineers relied on torches and backup generators to continue working, with drivers adjusting to the unexpected conditions. George Russell noted the chaos could have been worse had the outage occurred later in the day when floodlights were essential.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton made his Ferrari testing debut with an impressive 70 laps, finishing fifth in the morning with a time of 1:31.834. After lunch, Leclerc posted a best lap of 1:30.878 but ultimately ranked fourth, while Norris clocked the fastest time at 1:30.430.

Antonelli, making his first official outing for Mercedes, led the initial four-hour stint with 78 laps and a time of 1:31.428 on medium tyres. Russell followed with 69 laps, ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who completed 74 laps. Meanwhile, Liam Lawson, Verstappen’s new teammate, spun the RB21 in the morning but still managed the second-fastest lap of the session.

Williams' Alex Albon finished third in the morning session with 63 laps, while his new teammate Carlos Sainz, now at Williams after leaving Ferrari, ended fifth with 68 laps. Racing Bulls’ Yuki Tsunoda matched Antonelli’s 78-lap tally, with British rookie Oliver Bearman logging 72 laps for Haas.

Esteban Ocon, also at Haas, completed the most laps of the day with 88. Australian rookie Jack Doohan tested for Alpine, ending sixth with 68 laps, while compatriot Oscar Piastri finished eighth for McLaren with 66 laps. Teams have three days of testing in Bahrain before the 24-race Formula 1 season kicks off in Australia on March 16.
