Nikita Mazepin: Russian driver files lawsuit in high court to end sanctions
Posted : 03 May 2023
Nikita Mazepin, a Russian racing driver, filed a High Court lawsuit against James Cleverly, the British Foreign Secretary, to have the sanctions imposed on him repealed.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in March 2022, the UK, Canada, and the European Union imposed sanctions on Mazepin and his father Dmitry.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was said to be good friends with billionaire businessman Dmitry Mazepin.
The invasion led to Mazepin being fired by the Formula 1 team Haas as well.
Mazepin wasn't present, nor was his father.
As part of the sanctions, Mazepin and his father are subject to an asset freeze and a travel restriction; nevertheless, attorneys for the Foreign Office claimed that despite the sanctions being in place, Mazepin may continue engage with Formula One teams.
In his quest to rejoin Formula One, Mazepin is also contesting Canadian and EU penalties.
