Niels Wittich has stepped down from his position as Formula 1's race director with immediate effect, the FIA confirmed. The German, who replaced Michael Masi in 2022, is leaving to pursue new opportunities. His departure has come as a surprise, particularly as the F1 season is nearing its conclusion with just three races left, and both the drivers' and constructors' championships still undecided.
Rui Marques, the former race director for Formula 2 and 3, will take over the role from the next race in Las Vegas. The FIA expressed gratitude for Wittich's professionalism and dedication during his tenure. A spokesperson also highlighted Marques' extensive experience in motorsport, having previously held various roles including track marshal, steward, and deputy race director in different championships.
Wittich's departure is unexpected, especially so late in the season, with some sources suggesting his exit is linked to tensions with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. It follows a series of departures from the FIA, including several senior officials over the past year. Wittich's sudden exit also comes after a controversial incident during the US Grand Prix, where FIA racing guidelines were called into question following an on-track dispute between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
While Wittich's exit follows in the footsteps of his predecessor, Michael Masi, whose handling of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix sparked controversy, Wittich’s departure appears to be less linked to specific on-track incidents. However, there has been ongoing dissatisfaction from drivers and teams about the FIA’s race control management, a concern that has simmered throughout Wittich’s time in the role.
