Neuville Edges Closer to First WRC Title with Acropolis Rally Win

Posted : 09 September 2024

Thierry Neuville took a significant step towards his first World Rally Championship title with a victory at the Acropolis Rally on Sunday, as his main competitor, Sebastian Ogier, encountered misfortune. At 36, Neuville demonstrated his mastery of the challenging Greek terrain, finishing ahead of Hyundai teammates Dani Sordo and Ott Tanak. Ogier, who was in contention for the title, fell out of the top three after his Toyota rolled over, costing him valuable points.

Neuville had maintained the lead since midday Saturday and adeptly navigated the demanding conditions of the final day, securing his second win of the season following his triumph in Monte-Carlo. "We followed our objectives throughout the weekend and it paid off. The car worked perfectly so I have to thank the team," Neuville remarked after achieving his 21st WRC victory. He admitted to being unaware of Ogier’s crash until he saw the damaged car, which reinforced his strategy to simply finish the race and secure the win.

Ogier, who started the rally just 27 points behind Neuville, saw his hopes for a ninth world title diminish after a series of setbacks. On Friday, a turbocharger issue during the final special stage cost him over two minutes. Although he made up some ground on Saturday and performed well in the initial specials on Sunday, his rally ended prematurely when he rolled his car during the Power Stage, costing him additional points.

With three rounds remaining, Ogier, the eight-time world champion, must now deliver a flawless performance and hope for a misstep from Neuville. The Belgian, a five-time runner-up in the championship, now leads Ogier by 34 points. The championship battle will continue in Chile in less than three weeks, followed by the Central European Rally in Germany and the season finale in Japan in mid-November.
