Neuville Aims to Defend Title as WRC 2025 Season Begins at Monte Carlo Rally

Posted : 22 January 2025

The 2025 World Rally Championship kicks off with the highly anticipated Monte Carlo Rally, where defending champion Thierry Neuville will aim to retain his title. Neuville, who claimed his first championship in 2024 after finishing as runner-up five times, is determined to continue his success. At 36, he remains hungry for another victory and is confident that his experience and dedication will place him among the top competitors once again. As he continues with Hyundai, Neuville is focused not only on defending his individual title but also on helping the team challenge Toyota for the manufacturers’ championship.

Kalle Rovanperä, the 2022 world champion, returns to the full WRC season after taking a semi-sabbatical in 2024. Despite participating in only seven rallies last year, the Finnish driver won four of them and proved his dominance. Now back with Toyota, Rovanperä is focused on regaining his title, emphasizing that his ambition remains unchanged: he is here to win. Alongside Rovanperä, Toyota's Elfyn Evans and Hyundai's Ott Tänak, the 2019 champion, are expected to be strong contenders for the championship.

Eight-time world champion Sébastien Ogier will compete in select events for Toyota, aiming for a record ninth title, although his part-time schedule limits his chances for a full-season title run. Ogier, a veteran of the Monte Carlo Rally with a record nine wins, is cautious about the unpredictable conditions of the rally, approaching it with respect and a strategic mindset. His experience and ability to handle challenging conditions make him a formidable competitor, even in a limited number of events.

The 2025 season also introduces some changes to the calendar, with Saudi Arabia hosting its first WRC race at the season finale in November. The calendar has expanded to 14 races, with new events in the Canary Islands and Paraguay, while Croatia and Poland have been removed. Monte Carlo remains the historic opening rally, having first been held in 1911, and continues to be one of the most prestigious events in the sport, despite its controversial moments over the years.
