MotoGP Implements Engine Freeze Ahead of 2027 Capacity Reduction

Posted : 11 October 2024

Motorcycle manufacturers will be required to utilize their 2025 engines during the 2026 season as MotoGP prepares for a shift from 1,000cc to 850cc engines in 2027, as announced by the Grand Prix Commission on Thursday. The decision to freeze engine specifications for the 2026 season aims to control costs and maintain fairness across the competition as teams gear up for the upcoming changes.

The Grand Prix Commission clarified that exceptions to this engine freeze will only be permitted in cases of safety or reliability concerns. These adjustments will be strictly regulated, ensuring that no performance advantages are gained from such modifications. This approach is designed to ensure that all competitors operate on a level playing field as they adapt to the new regulations.

The decision to reduce engine capacity to 850cc, initially announced in May, is part of MotoGP's broader initiative to enhance safety and sustainability in the sport. This change will also include a decrease in the maximum number of engines each rider is allowed, reflecting the series' commitment to responsible practices in motorcycle racing.
