MotoGP: Aleix Espargaro wins British Grand Prix, overtakes Bagnaia
Posted : 07 August 2023
Aleix Espargaro of Spain secured victory at the British Grand Prix by making a decisive pass on the last lap to overtake the reigning MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia at Silverstone.
Riding for Aprilia, Espargaro clinched his first triumph of the season, while Bagnaia from Ducati, who had held the lead since the second lap, settled for second place.
With his win, Italian rider Bagnaia extended his championship lead by 41 points, benefiting from Marco Bezzecchi's crash that took him out of the race.
Completing the podium was South Africa's Brad Binder, representing KTM.
However, the race saw a mishap for six-time champion Marc Marquez, who crashed after colliding with Enea Bastianini from Ducati when only five laps were left. Marquez, the Spanish Honda rider, has faced a challenging season, having missed five out of the nine races and failing to complete any race since last year's Malaysian GP in October.
The next event, the Austrian GP at Spielberg, is scheduled for August 20th.
