Monaco Grand Prix: Carlos Sainz tops first practice as Alex Albon crashes
Posted : 27 May 2023
Max Verstappen was having difficulty keeping up in sixth place as Ferrari's Carlos Sainz set the pace.
Verstappen, complaining that the car was set too low and bottoming, was behind his team-mate Sergio Perez and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
Albon's crash prevented Leclerc from setting a lap that might have threatened Sainz.
Leclerc, who was born and bred in Monaco and has won the pole position here for the past two years, was compelled to forgo a quick lap that would have been just a little bit slower than Sainz's.
With little over three minutes left in the practise period, Alonso, who was 0.338 seconds behind than Sainz, was also doing a faster lap.
George Russell in the second Mercedes was also having trouble. He finished a second slower than Hamilton and ranked 15th quickest, citing of insufficient rear grip and trouble getting his tyres warmed up.
Hamilton's test in the Mercedes, which has undergone a significant makeover with new front suspension, sidepods, and floor as they work to regain competitiveness, was positive.
Sainz and Alonso eventually overtook Hamilton as the fastest driver, however Hamilton remained near the front throughout.
