Mirko Bortolotti triumphs at Sachsenring, regains DTM championship lead

Posted : 11 September 2023
Mirko Bortolotti reclaimed the lead in the DTM championship at the Sachsenring, securing his victory in race twelve of the season. Despite a race stoppage on lap one due to a collision, Bortolotti, driving for SSR Performance in a Lamborghini, kept his composure and won with a lead of 1.541 seconds.

Luca Stolz, the winner on Saturday in a Mercedes-AMG GT3, finished second. However, Ricardo Feller, who initially came in third in an Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo2, received a five-second penalty for causing a collision, promoting Bortolotti's teammate Franck Perera to third place.

The race at the Sachsenring marked the return of the DTM series to the track after 21 years, attracting 42,000 spectators over three days of thrilling motorsport in sunny late summer weather.

The race was interrupted just two minutes in due to a multi-car collision, with a more than 20-minute delay before the restart. Bortolotti, who started from pole, maintained his lead after the restart, followed by Stolz, Jack Aitken, Perera, and Feller.

All the top drivers made their pit stops as soon as the window opened, with Bortolotti holding onto his lead. Aitken was overtaken by Stolz and then Feller, resulting in Aitken's retirement due to a puncture. Feller later received a time penalty for the incident.

Despite an oil pressure issue, Bortolotti refused to surrender his lead and secured his third consecutive victory, moving him back to the top of the DTM Drivers' Championship. Behind the top three, Thomas Preining finished fourth, followed by Thierry Vermeulen in fifth.

Luca Stolz expressed his satisfaction with the weekend's performance, especially considering the success ballast, which made it challenging to stay with the leading group. He successfully defended his position against Aitken and Feller during the race.
