Mick Schumacher, the reserve driver for Mercedes, will leave the Formula One team at the end of the season, with Valtteri Bottas expected to replace him. The 25-year-old son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher will pursue new opportunities, as confirmed in a statement from Mercedes during the Qatar Grand Prix. Alpine also announced that Schumacher would continue his racing career with them in the World Endurance Championship next year.
Bottas, whose contract with Swiss-based Sauber expires at the end of the season, has decided against making a full-time switch to IndyCar in 2025. Instead, he is exploring other opportunities within Formula One. The Finnish driver, who will be replaced by Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto at Sauber, indicated that his discussions with Mercedes were progressing well. Bottas stated that he would not commit to a full IndyCar season in 2025, as it felt too soon after spending 12 years in Formula One.
Despite turning down a full-season offer from IndyCar, Bottas expressed interest in participating in one-off races, such as the Indianapolis 500, Australian V8s, and rallying. His primary focus remains on Formula One, and he hopes to secure a position for 2026, especially with a new team entering the sport, which would create additional opportunities for drivers. Bottas emphasized that he is not ready to leave Formula One just yet and is eager to continue testing and contributing to the sport in the future.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Schumacher for his high-caliber talent, noting that he deserved to compete at the highest levels of motorsport. Schumacher, who has served as Mercedes' reserve driver for the past two years, shared his frustration with not being able to race regularly. He expressed a strong desire to refocus on his racing career, stating that racing is what truly drives him and gives him the satisfaction he craves as a driver.
