Miami Grand Prix: Red flag ends qualifying with Max Verstappen eighth and Sergio Perez on pole
Posted : 07 May 2023
While teammate and championship contender Max Verstappen will start only eighth, Red Bull's Sergio Perez secured pole position for the Miami Grand Prix.
When Ferrari's Charles Leclerc crashed during the final practice, Verstappen made a mistake on his first run, and the session could not be continued.
Fernando Alonso of the Aston Martin will sit in front of Perez.
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari comes in third, and the US-based Haas team's Kevin Magnussen scores an incredible fourth.
"That was a mistake of mine trying to put it to the limit and then having to abort the lap," said Verstappen.
"Then you rely on a bit of luck of course that there is not going to be a red flag. It can happen on a street circuit so I'm a bit upset with myself."
Mercedes suffered in other areas. Lewis Hamilton will start in 13th after being eliminated in the second practice. The team's decision to send him out late made it difficult for him to properly condition his tyres, which jeopardized him.
In the top-10 shootout, George Russell was able to elude detection and finished sixth, just behind Pierre Gasly's Alpine.
