Miami Grand Prix: Max Verstappen wins from ninth on grid to extend championship lead

Posted : 08 May 2023
Max Verstappen of Red Bull was in a league of his own as he raced from ninth on the grid to win the Miami Grand Prix.

The world champion delivered a brilliant performance, defeating teammate Sergio Perez, who began from pole position, by utilizing an off-set tyre strategy.

Verstappen pitted 25 circuits behind Perez, restarted a second behind, then overtook Perez for the lead a lap later after running a lengthy first stint on hard tyres.

Perez suffered a humiliating loss, and it cast considerable doubt on his assertions that he can contend with Verstappen for the championship this year.

"I just had a clean race and picked the cars off one by one," said Verstappen. "I stayed out really long on the hard tyres and I think that's what made the difference and then a good little battle with Checo at the end.

"Yesterday was of course a bit of a setback but today we kept it calm, kept it clean and for sure winning a race from P9 is very satisfying."

Perez added: "I tried. I gave it my all. We had graining and initial pace wasn't good.

"The medium [tyre] we had initially was poor, more than expected. It really compromised our pace and Max had tremendous pace on the hard and we will analyse what went wrong today because we simply didn't have the pace."

With an excellent performance of his own, Fernando Alonso extended his fantastic season with Aston Martin to earn his fourth podium position in five races.

Mercedes' George Russell finished a solid fourth, while Ferrari had a disappointing afternoon.

After receiving a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane during his pit stop, Carlos Sainz lost ground to Alonso in the second stint and finished fifth. He had battled Alonso in the first stint.

Charles Leclerc, a teammate who crashed in qualifying and started ninth, had a forgettable race.

With 20 laps remaining, he managed to pass Kevin Magnussen of Haas, who had an excellent race, and move up to seventh place, behind Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, who was using the same off-set strategy as Verstappen and passed Leclerc in the closing laps.
