Mercedes has bolstered its team by securing the services of former Ferrari designer Simone Resta as their new strategic development director, marking a significant move in their restructuring efforts to regain competitiveness in Formula 1.
Resta's recruitment, at the age of 53, underscores Mercedes' commitment to revitalize their engineering capabilities, particularly with the aim of returning to the forefront of F1 competition. Notably, Resta had previously collaborated with Mercedes' technical director, James Allison, during their tenure at Ferrari from 2013 to 2016.
Joining Resta in the Mercedes lineup is Enrico Sampo, who will assume the role of head of performance software applications, transitioning from Ferrari to further bolster the Silver Arrows' technical expertise. Additionally, Mercedes has internally appointed David Nelson to replace Loic Serra as performance director, a key position within the team's hierarchy.
Having played pivotal roles in Ferrari's design department, particularly during the creation of their competitive 2017 and 2018 cars, Resta brings a wealth of experience to Mercedes, aiming to optimize their engineering capabilities for future success. These strategic acquisitions come as Mercedes grapples with challenges in F1 competitiveness under the revised technical regulations introduced in 2022, with a renewed focus on positioning the team strongly for the upcoming technical changes slated for 2026.
