McLaren's team principal, Andrea Stella, has reassured Lando Norris that he does not need to alter his driving style in the battle for the Formula One title against Max Verstappen of Red Bull. This statement follows Norris's concerns expressed before the Mexico City Grand Prix, where he felt adjustments were necessary to compete effectively with the championship leader. After Norris secured a second-place finish while Verstappen ended up sixth with two penalties, Stella emphasized that Norris should continue racing as he has been.
Stella conveyed that McLaren supports Norris’s current approach, stating, "Lando – we like, we approve, we confirm the way you go racing." He urged Norris not to seek out justice on the track but to focus on racing fairly. The team leader reassured him that decisions regarding race incidents should be left to the stewards, indicating that Norris should not feel pressured to prove anything beyond his natural racing instincts.
Despite the challenges posed by competitors like Ferrari, who are closing the gap in the constructors' championship after Carlos Sainz's victory in Mexico, Stella expressed optimism. He noted that without some early race incidents, Norris might have been able to contend for the win. Stella highlighted that McLaren’s upgraded car appears competitive and is now on par with Ferrari, providing hope for the remainder of the season as they aim to maintain their position in the standings.
