McLaren Momentum Builds as F1 Heads to Saudi Arabia

Posted : 17 April 2025

This weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix marks the conclusion of Formula One’s first triple-header of the season, following stops in Japan and Bahrain. The series now heads to Jeddah, a high-speed street circuit on the shores of the Red Sea. McLaren enters the fifth round of the 24-race calendar in impressive form, having claimed three victories from the past four races.

Oscar Piastri’s flawless drive in Bahrain brought him within three points of championship leader and teammate Lando Norris. With Red Bull faltering, McLaren could soon see an intra-team rivalry emerge, despite the team's insistence on treating both drivers equally.

Red Bull, meanwhile, aims to bounce back from a difficult outing in Bahrain where Max Verstappen finished sixth, over 30 seconds behind the race winner. The team hopes to rediscover their form at a venue that has served them well, with Verstappen claiming victories in Jeddah in 2022 and 2024.

Acknowledging the setback, Verstappen emphasized the need to improve the car and end the triple-header with a strong showing. He remains third in the standings, trailing Norris by eight points and looking to repeat the dominant performance he displayed in Japan, his only win so far this season.

The Jeddah Corniche Circuit offers a stark contrast to Bahrain, with its status as the fastest street track in Formula One. Featuring 27 corners and three DRS zones, it provides ample overtaking opportunities but little margin for error due to the walled track layout.

Meanwhile, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly picked up the team’s first points of the season in Bahrain, and celebrated his performance with a nod to investor Rory McIlroy’s Masters victory. At Mercedes, George Russell earned praise from team boss Toto Wolff after a gritty second-place finish despite late-race car issues.

Teammate Kimi Antonelli, facing a learning curve in his rookie season, will aim to bounce back after finishing outside the points.
