McLaren Calls for Inquiry into Norris' Penalty at Qatar Grand Prix

Posted : 02 December 2024

McLaren has called for an inquiry into the penalty imposed on Lando Norris for allegedly ignoring yellow flags during the Qatar Grand Prix. Team principal Andrea Stella criticized the decision to give Norris a 10-second stop-and-go penalty, arguing that it was disproportionate and lacked clarity. The penalty cost Norris second place, dropping him to 10th, and derailed McLaren's strong challenge for the constructors' championship.

The penalty not only affected Norris' race but also significantly impacted McLaren's position in the championship standings. With just one race left in the season, McLaren’s lead over Ferrari was reduced to 21 points, with a maximum of 44 points still available in Abu Dhabi. Had Norris maintained his position, McLaren would have only needed a few points in the final race to secure the title.

Stella described the penalty as overly simplistic and suggested that the FIA might have applied a rule without fully considering the context. He compared the decision to the retrieval of an outdated rulebook, applying a rigid approach without flexibility. This remark pointed to the ongoing turmoil within the FIA, which recently saw changes in race direction and stewarding, including the firing of a senior steward just last week.

Stella's frustration was echoed by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who also criticized the FIA's approach. Wolff called for more rational decision-making, expressing concern that the governing body’s recent actions had lacked logical consistency. The FIA has yet to provide a clear explanation for the firing of race director Niels Wittich, who was replaced by Rui Marques just before the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
