Max Verstappen would like to see Fernando Alonso win a race
Posted : 16 June 2023
Max Verstappen expressed his admiration for Fernando Alonso and revealed that if he himself cannot win any race this year, he would be thrilled to see Alonso take the victory instead.
Verstappen's Red Bull team has been dominating this season, winning all seven races so far, and there is a possibility they could continue their winning streak.
However, when asked about his preferred driver to secure a race win, Verstappen enthusiastically named Alonso. He stated, "If you ask me to choose one driver whom I would love to see win a race, it would be him."
Verstappen, who currently holds a significant 53-point lead in the drivers' championship, emphasized that Alonso truly deserves it and referred to him as a genuine racer.
Alonso, a former two-time champion with Renault in 2005 and 2006, last tasted victory in 2013 while driving for Ferrari. After a challenging period with McLaren from 2015 to 2018, Alonso took a two-year hiatus from Formula 1 to compete in endurance racing and the Indianapolis 500. He made his return in 2021 with Alpine and then switched to Aston Martin for the 2023 season.
Alonso currently holds third place in the championship standings and has consistently achieved podium finishes, with only two exceptions, throughout the year.
Verstappen expressed his fondness for Alonso, emphasizing his never-give-up attitude and evident passion for the sport. Verstappen acknowledged that after years of driving cars that were only competitive in the midfield, Alonso's love for racing might have wavered, but he still sees him as a genuine racer—an "animal" on the track.
