Max Verstappen remains determined despite Red Bull losing their lead in the constructors' championship for the first time in two-and-a-half years. The team faces a challenging week as they head to Singapore, having been overtaken by McLaren, who now lead by 20 points following Oscar Piastri's impressive win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, suffered a setback with a late collision with Carlos Sainz, which left both drivers out of the race and further compounded Red Bull's troubles.
McLaren's Lando Norris has closed the gap to Verstappen in the drivers' standings, now trailing by 59 points with seven races and three sprints remaining this season. Verstappen, who dominated early in the season with seven wins from the first ten races, has struggled to secure a victory in the last seven rounds as competitors from McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes have all claimed race wins.
Despite recent setbacks, Verstappen remains resolute about Red Bull’s prospects. After finishing fifth in Baku, he emphasized that the team is committed to fighting for the championship, insisting that "the fight is not over" and that they will not concede defeat. However, Red Bull’s performance at the Marina Bay Circuit, known for its challenging conditions, may pose additional difficulties.
Historically, Red Bull has struggled at Singapore's Marina Bay Circuit, the scene of their only loss last season when Ferrari's Sainz took victory. Verstappen has yet to win on this demanding street circuit, which is notorious for its unpredictable weather and challenging track conditions. Although Perez secured a win there in 2022, Red Bull has not claimed victory in Singapore since Sebastian Vettel’s triumph in 2013.
