Max Verstappen's Reign Faces Growing Threat as F1 Heads into 2025 Season

Posted : 11 December 2024

Max Verstappen’s dominance in Formula 1 is set to extend beyond 1,000 days at the start of the 2025 season, but the 2024 campaign hinted that his reign as world champion could be in jeopardy. This year saw seven different drivers each securing at least two wins in the record 24-race season, signaling a shift towards a more competitive 2025.

Verstappen, who won nine races in 2024, fell short of his remarkable 2023 tally of 19 victories, with his streak of seven wins from the first ten rounds followed by a ten-race winless spell.

McLaren, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, broke Red Bull's stronghold, capturing their first constructors' title in 26 years. Both drivers are now seen as serious contenders for the drivers' crown, with Norris, who finished as runner-up in 2024, optimistic about his prospects for 2025.

Despite a challenging year, Norris expressed confidence, learning from Verstappen and others as he prepares for the next season. His thrilling Abu Dhabi victory from pole position closed out a season where no driver managed more than two consecutive wins.

In a season marked by significant driver changes, Lewis Hamilton made a high-profile move to Ferrari, leaving Mercedes after 16 years to replace Carlos Sainz. Hamilton, now 40, is looking to reignite his career and end Ferrari's 16-year title drought, despite enduring his worst season in Formula 1, finishing seventh overall.

His switch to Ferrari is expected to reignite hopes among fans, with Hamilton joining Charles Leclerc to create a formidable pairing. Leclerc, fresh from two wins in Monaco and Monza, will now have the experience of a champion beside him.

Meanwhile, Mercedes will welcome 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli, joining George Russell, who won in Austria and Las Vegas in 2024. Russell’s rivalry with Verstappen, which was ignited by a public spat, will likely carry over into next season, providing another compelling narrative for the 2025 season.

The sport also witnessed the departure of key figures like Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas, and Kevin Magnussen, making room for emerging talents such as Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Oliver Bearman.
