Rwandan President Paul Kagame joined Max Verstappen on stage at an awards ceremony in Kigali on Friday as the Red Bull driver received the Formula One champion’s trophy for the fourth consecutive year.
The event marked the first time the awards were held in Africa, with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem also present to hand Verstappen the trophy. President Kagame, who had previously spoken about Rwanda’s ambitions to host a Grand Prix, shared the stage with Verstappen as the Dutch driver took center stage for his achievement.
Verstappen, who is now one of only six drivers to win four or more World Championships since the inception of Formula One in 1950, expressed pride in his success and the performance of his team. Reflecting on the season, he described securing four titles as an "incredible" achievement and voiced his hope for continued success.
“I hope we can be successful for a longer period of time,” Verstappen said, adding that he anticipates a tough competition in the coming years, particularly with significant changes in the sport expected by 2026.
In a change from previous seasons, McLaren claimed the Constructors' Championship for the first time in 26 years, ending Red Bull's dominance. Verstappen acknowledged this shift, expressing that his team deserved more in the Constructors' battle and reiterating his commitment to giving his best.
He looked ahead to the challenges of the upcoming season, stating his excitement about the anticipated competition, which he expects to feature a stronger battle between multiple teams.
Earlier in the week, Verstappen participated in a grassroots motorsports development program with young people, a commitment he made following a penalty for swearing at the Singapore Grand Prix in October.
The Dutch driver has used this opportunity to give back to the sport’s community, demonstrating his dedication to its growth. McLaren's Lando Norris congratulated Verstappen at the ceremony, expressing his enthusiasm for the forthcoming season, where he anticipates an even fiercer competition for the title.
Other notable figures recognized at the event included Verstappen's teammate, Sergio Perez, who, despite a challenging season, was honored with the Action of the Year award for an overtake in China. Brazilian F2 champion Gabriel Bortoleto, set to debut with Sauber in Formula One next year, was named Rookie of the Year, marking another milestone in his promising motorsport career.
