Max Verstappen defeats Fernando Alonso to win the Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix was won by Red Bull's Max Verstappen over Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso despite a mid-race rain.
 
Although Verstappen seemed to be cruising at the front, his team's decision to prolong his pit stop in an effort to time it with the rain put his race in more peril.
 
Alonso had pitted for a set of dry tyres as the rain was getting heavier, and it looked like Aston Martin missed the opportunity to beat Verstappen.
 
It appeared as though Alonso's stop, which occurred while Verstappen was still driving on untreated slicks, may have resulted in the Spaniard gaining the lead if he had been handed treaded tyres.
 
Verstappen did the same on the next lap, but Alonso had to stop once again for intermediate tyres, ending his chances of winning.
 
Verstappen now leads teammate Sergio Perez by 39 points in the championship after his fourth victory in as many races this season.
 
The Mexican driver, who crashed in qualifying, had a terrible race and came in last after starting from the back.
