Max Verstappen Criticized by Engineer After Collision with Hamilton at Hungarian Grand Prix

Posted : 22 July 2024

Max Verstappen received a public reprimand from his own engineer on Sunday after criticizing Red Bull's strategy, following a frustrating fifth-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, during which he survived a collision with Lewis Hamilton. The three-time world champion and current drivers' championship leader clashed with Hamilton on lap 63 of the 70-lap race, leading to a heated exchange on the team radio.

Verstappen, 26, expressed his frustrations through a series of expletive-laden radio messages, blaming the team's strategy and the collision, which many observers attributed to his own actions. His race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, responded sternly, refusing to engage in a blame game and calling Verstappen's behavior "childish." Despite being summoned to the stewards' office to explain the incident, no further action was taken against the Dutch driver.

Defending his outburst, Verstappen stated that being vocal on the radio is part of the sport and suggested that those who disapprove should stay home. This incident was part of a series of notable events involving Verstappen, highlighting the increasing pressure on him and Red Bull as McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari close in on their performance and points advantage. Oscar Piastri secured victory in the race, followed by his McLaren teammate Lando Norris, with Hamilton finishing third, marking three races without a win for Verstappen and Red Bull.

The collision with Hamilton occurred as Verstappen attempted an inside move at Turn One, resulting in brief airborne contact. Verstappen maintained that he was fully committed to the move and that Hamilton's actions led to the contact. Hamilton, on the other hand, described the incident as a racing incident, noting that he had left enough space and that Verstappen's aggressive approach led to the collision. Verstappen's points lead was reduced to 76 by Norris, while his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez finished seventh after starting from 16th on the grid, following criticism from team boss Christian Horner for his recent poor qualifying performances.
