Max Verstappen delivered an impressive performance during qualifying for the sprint race at the United States Grand Prix, securing pole position in a fast-paced session on Friday. This marks the first time since the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in May that the three-time world champion has claimed any form of pole position. Verstappen set a best lap of 1:32.833, narrowly edging out Mercedes' George Russell, who finished just 0.012 seconds behind. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc took third on the grid, setting the stage for an exciting race.
Lando Norris of McLaren, who is currently trailing Verstappen by 52 points in the championship standings, qualified fourth, while Carlos Sainz of Ferrari and Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg rounded out the top six. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton qualified in seventh for Mercedes, followed by Kevin Magnussen in the second Haas, Yuki Tsunoda of RB, and Williams' Franco Colapinto. Notably, both Sergio Perez from Red Bull and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri failed to make it to the top ten shootout, marking a disappointing outcome for the duo.
The qualifying session took place on a warm and dry day at the Circuit of the Americas, with track temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius. Verstappen led the initial laps, setting a benchmark that was quickly surpassed by Magnussen, Leclerc, and Hamilton. The first 15-minute session saw Leclerc take the lead with a time of 1:33.647, resulting in early exits for several drivers, including Piastri, Esteban Ocon from Alpine, and Valtteri Bottas from Alfa Romeo. A late improvement by Piastri was unfortunately disqualified due to exceeding track limits at Turn 19.
As the second session began, all drivers started on medium tires, with Hamilton initially setting the pace. However, Sainz soon took the lead before Verstappen made his mark with a time of 1:33.290. Despite expressing concerns about his car's ride quality on team radio, Verstappen managed to secure pole position after delaying his final lap. In the final shootout, he outpaced Russell and Leclerc, leaving Norris in fourth and setting up an anticipated sprint race for Saturday.
