MotoGP Season Finale: Martin Leads Bagnaia by 24 Points Heading into Barcelona

Posted : 14 November 2024

For the second consecutive season, MotoGP is heading into a thrilling finale with Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia set to battle for the world championship title in the final race of the season this weekend. Last year, Bagnaia went into the final race with a 21-point lead, which he successfully converted into a second consecutive title. This time, however, it is Martin who holds the advantage, leading Bagnaia by 24 points. Even if Bagnaia wins both the sprint and the grand prix, Martin can still secure the title by finishing on the podium in Barcelona.

Martin has the opportunity to clinch his first championship title as early as Saturday if he wins the sprint. Despite his strong position, former world champion Jorge Lorenzo warns that nothing is certain until the final flag drops. Historically, the final race has produced some unexpected twists, with past seasons seeing significant points deficits overturned, such as Nicky Hayden’s 2006 victory after Valentino Rossi's crash. The uncertainty of this season, which has seen multiple lead changes between Martin and Bagnaia, suggests that the championship fight could still take a dramatic turn.

Both Martin and Bagnaia have been dominant throughout the season, with Bagnaia securing 10 wins to Martin’s three. However, Martin’s consistency has been a key factor in his lead, having secured 10 second-place finishes. Lorenzo notes that while both riders have made mistakes throughout the season, Martin’s steady performance and intelligent approach make him a deserving contender for the title. The rivalry is intensified by the fact that Martin and Bagnaia race on identical Ducati machines, with Martin riding for Pramac and Bagnaia for the factory team.

The 2023 MotoGP season has been dominated by Ducati, which fields eight bikes out of 22 on the grid. Despite this, Marc Marquez, racing for the Gresini team, has still managed to claim three wins. This season’s finale in Barcelona is also notable for its symbolic significance, as the race was originally scheduled for Valencia but was moved due to the region’s devastating floods, which have caused over 220 fatalities. The event, now dubbed the Solidarity GP, will not only showcase the fierce championship battle but also stand as a tribute to the people of Valencia.
