Marco Bezzecchi misses third consecutive victory; Bagnaia wins Assen Grand Prix

Posted : 25 June 2023
Marco Bezzecchi missed out on a third consecutive victory as fellow Italian Francesco Bagnaia took the win at the Assen Grand Prix. Brad Binder from South Africa came close to securing a surprise podium finish but was penalized for exceeding track limits. Bagnaia's victory solidified his position at the top of the MotoGP Championship standings with a 35-point lead.

Bagnaia seized the lead on Lap 3 and steadily increased his advantage to about one second, securing his fourth win of the season. Although facing pressure from the riders behind him, Bagnaia managed to create a gap in the final laps and celebrated the victory. Assen is a track he loves, and he expressed his delight in being there and in front of the enthusiastic crowd.

Marco Bezzecchi, who started from pole position, finished in second place, while Brad Binder, after initially securing third place, was demoted due to track limit violations. Aleix Espargaro benefited from Binder's penalty and claimed the final spot on the podium.

Binder had a superb start, taking the lead into Turn 1. Bagnaia overtook him on the third lap, but Binder remained close behind, with Bezzecchi in pursuit. The top three riders pulled away from the rest of the field.

While Bagnaia extended his lead, Bezzecchi attempted to chase him down but was unable to close the gap. Nevertheless, Bezzecchi expressed satisfaction with his performance and praised the fans and the circuit.

Despite suffering damage to his Aprilia's aerodynamics in a collision at the start, Espargaro displayed impressive pace and closed in on Binder.

Jorge Martin also gained speed throughout the race and was within striking distance in the final stages. Binder managed to hold on to second place on the last lap, while Espargaro finished a fraction of a second ahead of Martin, securing the podium position after Binder's penalty.

The race took place in hot temperatures, and several riders struggled with the track conditions. Jack Miller and Fabio Quartararo were among those who crashed out, with Quartararo's incident also involving Johann Zarco.
