Sebastien Loeb, a nine-time world rally champion, encountered difficulty in the Saudi desert during the Dakar Rally on Tuesday, rolling his Dacia just 12 kilometers into the third stage. Loeb, who was in sixth position at the time, and his co-driver Fabian Lurquin were unharmed, but their hopes for a first Dakar win took a significant hit after they faced multiple delays.
After completing repairs and continuing, they fell behind by over an hour, dropping out of the top 15 in the overall standings.
The stage, which stretched 327 kilometers from Bisha to Al-Henakiyah, saw Saood Variawa of Toyota claim victory, making history as the youngest Dakar stage winner at 19. Variawa was followed by Guerlain Chicherit of Mini and Toyota's Seth Quintero.
Despite a puncture caused by a large rock near the end of the stage, Variawa expressed satisfaction with his performance. South Africa’s Henk Lategan, the overall leader, only managed the 12th fastest time on the stage but extended his lead over Nasser Al-Attiyah by over seven minutes.
In the motorcycle category, Spanish rider Lorenzo Santolino took his first stage win, though Daniel Sanders of Australia retained the overall lead, maintaining a narrow advantage over American Skyler Howes.
The rally, which has been held entirely in Saudi Arabia, continues with the fourth stage scheduled for Wednesday, a 415-kilometer challenge from Al-Henakiyah to Al Ula. The two-week event is regarded as one of the toughest endurance races globally, with the final stage set for January 17.
