Liam Lawson expressed his shock at being demoted by Red Bull after just two races, admitting it was a complete surprise. The 23-year-old New Zealander, who had been selected to replace Sergio Perez, was unexpectedly moved to Red Bull's second team, Racing Bulls, following the Chinese Grand Prix.
Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda took his place at Red Bull in time for the Japanese Grand Prix, leaving Lawson to continue with Racing Bulls. Lawson stated that the discussions he had prior to the decision had not suggested such a move was coming.
Lawson’s time with Red Bull got off to a difficult start, with a poor showing in Australia where he qualified 18th and crashed out in rainy conditions. His struggles continued in China, where he qualified last for both the sprint and the grand prix, finishing 14th and 12th in those races.
These results led to the decision by team principal Christian Horner to replace him with Tsunoda, and motorsport director Helmut Marko admitted that the team had made a mistake by signing Lawson initially.
While Lawson would have preferred more time to prove himself, he acknowledged that the decision was out of his hands. Now, as part of Racing Bulls, he is focused on making the most of the opportunity and moving forward. He will have his first session in the Racing Bulls car during the first practice for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka on Friday.
