Liam Lawson, the New Zealand driver for Red Bull-owned RB, recently made light of McLaren's practice of playing the British national anthem after their Formula One victories, instead of the anthem of team founder Bruce McLaren from New Zealand. During a podcast, Lawson humorously remarked that McLaren was "really a New Zealand team," referencing the team's origins, despite its current British base. He also pointed out that Red Bull, although British-based, plays the Austrian anthem, highlighting a difference in approach.
At the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Lawson clarified that his comments were meant as a joke. He explained to reporters that he was laughing when making the statement and did not expect it to be taken so seriously. Lawson expressed his pride in his New Zealand heritage and the country’s motorsport legacy, emphasizing the deep respect he has for Bruce McLaren, an iconic figure in New Zealand motorsport, whom he admired growing up.
Bruce McLaren founded his racing team in 1963 and began competing in grand prix racing in 1966, but tragically passed away in 1970 while testing a Can-Am car. Today, McLaren is part of the McLaren Group, which is owned by Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, Mumtalakat.
