Lewis Hamilton may sign a new contract with Mercedes - Toto Wolff
Posted : 13 June 2023
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has indicated that Lewis Hamilton's contract extension with the team could be finalized before the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix. Hamilton's current £40m-a-season deal is set to expire in six months, but Wolff expressed optimism about reaching an agreement soon.
"We are talking more days than weeks," Wolff stated when asked about the contract negotiations, adding that he planned to meet with Hamilton to discuss the matter. The strong relationship between the two makes the financial conversation a bit uncomfortable, according to Wolff.
The anticipated contract extension is expected to be a multi-year deal, potentially extending Hamilton's Formula 1 career beyond his 40th birthday. Wolff emphasized Hamilton's significance to the sport and his unique qualities both on and off the track.
Hamilton, who last won a race in 2021 and currently trails in the championship, met with Wolff after the Spanish Grand Prix to solidify the new contract.
Mercedes' recent performance improvements have given Hamilton hope for his pursuit of an eighth world title, although Wolff cautioned that the team still has work to do despite their positive showing in Spain.
The negotiations between Hamilton and Mercedes are nearing a resolution, and fans eagerly await confirmation of the superstar driver's continued partnership with the team.
