Lewis Hamilton Achieves 200th Podium Finish at Hungarian Grand Prix

Posted : 22 July 2024

Two weeks after his emotional victory at the British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton celebrated another significant achievement on Sunday with his 200th career podium finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Racing at a circuit where he holds a record eight wins, the seven-time world champion finished third for Mercedes, despite a late-race collision with Red Bull's three-time champion Max Verstappen.

Hamilton expressed his gratitude to the crowd and congratulated the McLaren team, who secured a one-two finish with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Reflecting on his performance, Hamilton acknowledged the challenges his team faced, noting that while Mercedes did a great job with the car, they couldn’t match the pace of McLaren or Red Bull. He also described the intense battle with Verstappen in the final stages of the race as hair-raising but typical of motor racing.

His Mercedes teammate George Russell finished eighth, an impressive recovery after starting 17th, although the team missed the opportunity to secure a hat-trick of wins. Hamilton, who will join Ferrari next year to replace Carlos Sainz, moved up to sixth in the drivers' standings with 125 points, just one point ahead of Red Bull's Sergio Perez, who finished seventh. Russell holds the eighth position with 116 points.

Verstappen, finishing fifth, has now gone three races without a win but still leads the championship by 76 points over Norris, who has 189 points. In the constructors' standings, Red Bull leads with 389 points, followed by McLaren with 338, and Ferrari with 322. Mercedes is in fourth place with 241 points.
