Leclerc Tops Australian GP Second Practice as Verstappen Struggles

Posted : 14 March 2025

Charles Leclerc set the fastest time in the second practice session for the Australian Grand Prix, edging out Oscar Piastri by 0.124 seconds. The Ferrari driver posted a best lap of 1:16.439 on soft tyres, securing his position at the top of the leaderboard ahead of McLaren’s Piastri and Lando Norris in third.

Yuki Tsunoda impressed with a fourth-place finish in his RB, while Lewis Hamilton, still adjusting to his new Ferrari, finished fifth, improving on his 12th-place showing in the first practice. Max Verstappen, struggling with his Red Bull, placed seventh after completing ten laps fewer than Leclerc.

Mercedes endured a tough session as George Russell finished 10th, and Kimi Antonelli, replacing Hamilton at the team, ended up 16th. Meanwhile, Red Bull’s new driver Liam Lawson, who took over from Sergio Perez, could only manage 17th, reflecting Verstappen’s pre-weekend concerns that the team was not the fastest.

The session took place under ideal Melbourne weather, with Sauber rookie Gabriel Bortoleto first out of the pits before Alpine’s Pierre Gasly set the initial benchmark. As the session progressed, Norris and Russell briefly led before Leclerc stamped his authority, with Piastri unable to surpass him.

The earlier first practice session was eventful, featuring two red flags, including one caused by Haas rookie Ollie Bearman, who crashed into the barriers and was unable to participate in the second session.

Norris topped the first session, followed by Carlos Sainz, while Verstappen managed fifth. Despite multiple minor incidents on the fast Albert Park track, Leclerc’s dominance in the second session signals Ferrari’s strong start, while Red Bull faces early challenges in defending its supremacy.
