Leclerc Optimistic About Ferrari's Future After Monza Win

Posted : 03 September 2024

Despite Ferrari's ongoing struggle to match McLaren's pace, Charles Leclerc remains optimistic about the upcoming races in Azerbaijan and Singapore following his victory at the Italian Grand Prix. Leclerc secured a win at Monza with a strategic one-stop tire strategy, outlasting McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who both made two pit stops during the race. This win marked Ferrari's first since Leclerc's triumph in Monaco in May and their third of the season.

Ferrari's success at Monza allowed them to accumulate the most points, totaling 37, compared to McLaren's 34 and Mercedes' 16. This performance has reduced Ferrari's points deficit to 39 behind the current leaders, Red Bull, who have a narrow lead of eight points over McLaren. Leclerc's victory has injected renewed hope into Ferrari's season, although he acknowledges that McLaren remains the team to beat.

Leclerc expressed confidence about the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix, noting that the Baku circuit has historically suited his driving style and might offer another chance for Ferrari to showcase their competitiveness. He reflected positively on Ferrari's recent upgrades, including a new wing introduced at Monza, which contributed to closing the performance gap, though he acknowledged that the team is still trailing McLaren and Red Bull in overall pace.

While Leclerc praised Ferrari's progress, he tempered expectations about the team's ability to consistently challenge for wins throughout the rest of the season. He highlighted that despite improvements, Ferrari might still fall short against the leading teams on various tracks. Nevertheless, the results from Monza have demonstrated that Ferrari can compete closely with McLaren, signaling a step in the right direction for the team.
