Leclerc leads Ferrari one-two in Singapore GP first practice, monitor lizards add quirky twist

Posted : 15 September 2023
In the first practice session of the Singapore Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc led a Ferrari one-two with Carlos Sainz following closely. Leclerc posted a lap time 0.078 seconds faster than Sainz and 0.126 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen from Red Bull. McLaren's Lando Norris secured the fourth spot, while Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and George Russell took fifth and sixth places, respectively, with Sergio Perez from Red Bull in seventh.

During the session, there were three brief interruptions caused by monitor lizards crossing the track near Turn Nine. The Marina Bay Circuit underwent revisions this season, removing four corners due to infrastructure work, resulting in reduced lap times by up to 10 seconds and an extra lap added to the race.

Apart from the wildlife cautions, the session proceeded without major incidents, with no drivers making significant mistakes or hitting the circuit's notorious walls. Verstappen initially complained about oversteer in his car but managed to reminisce about the last time a monitor lizard was seen on the track in Singapore.

In 2016, he humorously referred to an especially large monitor lizard as "Godzilla." When spotting a smaller one this year, he quipped that it might be Godzilla's offspring. Behind Perez, Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin claimed eighth place, followed by Yuki Tsunoda from Alpha Tauri and Esteban Ocon from Alpine.

Several teams introduced upgrades for this race, with McLaren's Norris receiving notable modifications including a new floor and significant bodywork changes, while his teammate Oscar Piastri is set to receive these upgrades in the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix.
