Leclerc Leads Ferrari and McLaren Dominate Practice for Qatar Grand Prix Sprint

Posted : 29 November 2024

Ferrari and McLaren dominated the top four positions in practice for the Qatar Grand Prix sprint qualifying on Friday, with Charles Leclerc leading the pack ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris. Both teams are currently vying for second place in the Constructors' Championship, a race already decided in favor  of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who has claimed his fourth consecutive title.

Leclerc's best lap of 1:21.953 at the Lusail Circuit was 0.425 seconds faster than Norris, who is second in the drivers' standings, 21 points ahead of Leclerc. McLaren's Oscar Piastri was third, though he made an error during his lap, while Carlos Sainz finished fourth for Ferrari.

McLaren, which last won the Constructors' Championship in 1998, currently leads Ferrari by 24 points, with two races left and 103 points up for grabs, including the sprint race in Qatar. Verstappen, who secured his championship in Las Vegas last weekend, was 11th in practice, while his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez was 18th, with Red Bull still in the fight but trailing McLaren by 53 points.

Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the top five, driving for Red Bull-owned AlphaTauri, while Valtteri Bottas surprised with a strong sixth-place finish for Sauber. Aston Martin's Lance Stroll was seventh, with George Russell in eighth for Mercedes.

Russell reported brake issues during the session, while Alex Albon and Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top 10. McLaren is expected to perform well in the night race, having had success in Qatar last year, but Ferrari also showed strong form at the start of the weekend.
