Charles and Arthur Leclerc are set to make Formula One history by becoming the first brothers to drive as teammates during a practice session at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Friday. Ferrari shared a photo of the two drivers in matching overalls on X, with the caption "history makers."
This marks a significant moment for the Leclerc family, as Arthur, 24, will replace Carlos Sainz, who is leaving the team, to fulfill Ferrari’s young driver commitments alongside his older brother Charles, 27.
Arthur Leclerc, a Ferrari development driver, will take part in the opening practice session at Yas Marina. The 24-year-old, who raced in Formula Two last season, currently supports Ferrari in their simulator at their Maranello base and competes in the Italian GT championship.
Meanwhile, Oliver Bearman, the team's reserve driver, is ineligible for the session as he has already participated in three races this season for Ferrari and Haas, filling in for Kevin Magnussen in Brazil and taking over Charles Leclerc's car in Mexico.
While brothers have raced in Formula One before, such as Michael and Ralf Schumacher, they have never been teammates. The Rodriguez brothers, Pedro and Ricardo, also both raced for Ferrari, but not simultaneously. This unique scenario of the Leclerc brothers driving for the same team makes it even more historic.
Ferrari is currently battling McLaren for the constructors' championship, with just 21 points separating them. After Sunday’s race, Carlos Sainz will leave the team to make room for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
