Liam Lawson, who recently secured a race seat with Red Bull's RB team, is acutely aware that his future in Formula One could be in jeopardy if he fails to perform well for the remainder of the season. The 22-year-old New Zealander was announced as Daniel Ricciardo's replacement at the Italy-based outfit last week and is set to return to racing at a sprint weekend in Texas on October 20, kicking off a challenging triple-header that includes races in Mexico and Brazil.
Having previously impressed Red Bull executives during his stint as a substitute for the injured Ricciardo last season, Lawson has garnered substantial support to retain his position for the following year. However, only his Japanese teammate Yuki Tsunoda has been confirmed for the 2025 season, leaving Lawson with a pressing need to showcase his skills in the six remaining races of the current campaign. Lawson emphasized the importance of performance in securing his future, stating, “Even when you have a full-year contract, or a multi-year contract, those can be broken.”
Lawson made history as the 10th Kiwi driver to start a Grand Prix when he filled in for Ricciardo at Zandvoort last year, marking the first time since Brendon Hartley that a New Zealander raced for a team formerly known as Toro Rosso in 2018. After serving as a reserve driver this year, Lawson's rise to the forefront of the sport has excited fans and media in New Zealand, and it has brought immense relief to his family, who have sacrificed significantly for his racing ambitions.
In sharing the news of his Formula One opportunity with his family and supporters, Lawson found great joy in their reactions. “Their first reaction was exactly the same,” he noted, describing the immediate sense of relief he felt from his parents and others who have believed in him from the start. He acknowledged the hard work and sacrifices made by his family, including selling their home and supporting his racing dream, adding a personal touch to this pivotal moment in his career.
