Lategan Extends Dakar Rally Lead as Al-Attiyah Faces Penalty Setback

Posted : 10 January 2025

Henk Lategan of Toyota extended his lead in the Dakar Rally on Thursday after finishing third in the 428km stage five, from Al Ula to Hail. The South African's strong performance put him 10 minutes and 17 seconds ahead of Saudi driver Yazeed Al-Rajhi, who drives for the Overdrive Racing team. Lategan acknowledged the high-paced nature of the stage, noting the challenges of maintaining focus to avoid mistakes, but expressed satisfaction with his progress so far in the race.

Friday marks a rest day in the two-week rally, with the second half of the event resuming on Saturday from Hail to Al-Duwadimi. Lategan, despite not planning to start first in the upcoming stages, is in a commanding position as the race moves forward. He has remained consistent and focused, handling the pressure of leading the rally with confidence.

Qatar's Nasser Al-Attiyah, five-time Dakar winner, had been in contention for a stage win with Renault-owned Dacia but was penalized for arriving at the finish without a spare wheel. As a result, Toyota's Seth Quintero was promoted to stage winner after a one-second adjustment, claiming his second stage win of the event. Al-Attiyah, who had been 35 minutes behind Lategan at the start of the stage, remains 35 minutes adrift of the leader despite his dominant performance.

In the motorcycle category, Australian Daniel Sanders maintained his lead, holding a seven-minute, two-second advantage over Spanish rider Tosha Schareina. Sanders, who has led since the start of the rally, expressed frustration after experiencing a navigation issue in the final 40km of the stage, although he was relieved to encounter other riders at the time, preventing him from getting stuck. Botswana's Ross Branch remains in third position in the motorcycle race.
