Lando Norris Sees Ferrari as McLaren's Main Rival After Topping F1 Standings

Posted : 17 September 2024

Lando Norris has identified Ferrari as a bigger threat to McLaren than Red Bull, following McLaren's return to the top of the Formula One constructors' standings for the first time in over a decade. Oscar Piastri’s victory and Norris' fourth-place finish with the fastest lap at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix propelled McLaren ahead of Red Bull by 20 points. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished second, while his teammate Carlos Sainz crashed out after a late-race battle with Red Bull's Sergio Perez.

Norris emphasized Ferrari’s strong form, particularly with Leclerc's pole position in Baku and their strong showing at Monza. With upcoming races in Monza and Singapore, where Ferrari has historically performed well, Norris believes that Ferrari will be McLaren’s primary competition in the constructors' championship. The Italian team currently sits third, only 31 points behind Red Bull in the standings. Norris acknowledged the pressure Ferrari’s drivers, Leclerc and Sainz, have put on McLaren in recent races.

McLaren's resurgence has been a major milestone in an unpredictable Formula One season. After Red Bull's domination last year, where they won 21 of 22 races, McLaren's leap to the top of the standings marks a dramatic turnaround. Red Bull had held the lead in the constructors' standings for 55 consecutive races, but McLaren's improvements have allowed them to surpass not only Red Bull but also other strong teams like Ferrari and Mercedes.

Norris reflected on McLaren's journey from the season opener, where they were trailing behind Mercedes, to now leading the standings. He praised the team’s efforts in catching up to Red Bull, noting that McLaren's current form is something to be proud of. With seven races remaining, the competition remains fierce, but Norris remains confident that McLaren can maintain their lead against formidable rivals like Ferrari.
