Lando Norris of McLaren secured pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix on Saturday, surpassing Red Bull's Max Verstappen in a thrilling qualifying session that was interrupted by a red flag due to Carlos Sainz's crash. Norris clocked a time of 1 minute 30.002 seconds, finishing 0.155 seconds faster than Verstappen. Lewis Hamilton claimed third place, while his Mercedes teammate George Russell followed closely behind.
Norris expressed his satisfaction with the performance, noting, “It was good enough for pole, and I’m happy with that, especially here in Singapore.” He acknowledged feeling confident throughout the weekend, even if qualifying had been challenging. Conversely, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Sainz faced a disappointing Q3, with both drivers set to start from ninth and tenth positions, respectively. Sainz's crash occurred when his car lost control on the final turn, leading to the red flag and limiting other drivers' opportunities for quick laps.
Verstappen, who had a tough practice session finishing 15th, felt encouraged to be on the front row alongside Norris. “I’m happy to be on the front row if you look at where we came from yesterday,” he commented, recognizing the unpredictable nature of the Singapore track for the race ahead. Hamilton, who has struggled throughout the season, managed to put together a strong qualifying lap, stating, “All of a sudden the car came alive for the first time in qualifying in a long time.”
Oscar Piastri secured fifth for McLaren, while Nico Hulkenberg of Haas joined him on the third row. Fernando Alonso took seventh in his Aston Martin, with Yuki Tsunoda finishing eighth in the Red Bull. Verstappen's teammate, Sergio Perez, faced difficulties and will start 13th after failing to progress to the final qualifying session. Other notable eliminations included Williams' Alex Albon, Kevin Magnussen of Haas, and Esteban Ocon from Alpine, while Daniel Ricciardo, rumored to be in his last F1 race, was also among those cut in Q1.
