Kazakhstan MotoGP Cancelled Due to Flooding; Emilia-Romagna GP to Replace It

Posted : 15 July 2024

The Kazakhstan MotoGP, originally scheduled for September, has been canceled due to significant issues stemming from devastating floods that affected the country earlier this year. As a result, the event will be replaced by the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, set to take place at the Misano circuit in Italy on September 22, just two weeks after the San Marino Grand Prix.

Organizers announced the decision on Monday, stating that the operational and logistical challenges arising from the flooding made it impossible to hold the event in 2024. Kazakhstan was supposed to host the MotoGP for the first time last month, but unprecedented weather conditions and flooding across Central Asia prompted a national emergency.

The race had previously been postponed to later this year, taking over the spot of the Indian Grand Prix, which was scrapped in May after its debut in 2023. This cancellation follows last year’s planned race in Kazakhstan, which was also called off due to ongoing construction work at the circuit.

Instead, riders will remain in Italy for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, marking the third event in the country this season. The Italian MotoGP was held at Mugello in June, and the Emilia-Romagna GP has previously taken place in 2020 and 2021 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The MotoGP season will resume in early August with the British MotoGP at Silverstone, where two-time defending world champion Francesco Bagnaia leads the standings by 10 points over Spain's Jorge Martin.
