Jorge Martin led the field in the morning free practice session at the San Marino and Rimini Riviera MotoGP, giving a significant boost to the Spaniard as he aims to maintain his championship lead. Martin, who rides for Pramac, set a time of 1:31.707 at Misano Adriatico, narrowly trailing title rival Marc Marquez by just 0.037 seconds. This performance is particularly encouraging for Martin, who has not secured a Grand Prix victory since the French GP in May.
Despite his recent dry spell, Martin showed promising form, suggesting he could replicate his success at Misano from last season. Over the past five GPs, Martin has consistently finished in second place in both the sprint and main races, underlining his competitive edge. In contrast, Francesco Bagnaia, who is currently 23 points behind Martin and recovering from an injury sustained in last weekend's Aragon MotoGP crash, struggled in the session. Bagnaia ended up in eighth place, 0.462 seconds behind Martin, as his bike faced mechanical issues.
The second practice session, which will determine the top 10 riders advancing directly to Saturday's qualifying round, is set to start at 15:00 local time (13:00 GMT). Qualifying will play a crucial role in shaping the grid for both the sprint race on Saturday and the main GP on Sunday afternoon, with a total of 37 points available across the weekend.
