Jaume Masia leads way in Moto3™ practice at Motul Grand Prix of Japan
Posted : 29 September 2023
Jaume Masia continued his impressive form in Moto3™, securing the top spot on the timesheets during Friday morning's Practice 2 at the Motul Grand Prix of Japan. His swift lap of 1:57.068 established him as the leader of the lightweight class as they gear up for Saturday's action.
This practice session carried added significance at Motegi due to the looming threat of rain on Saturday. It was crucial for riders to record a solid lap time, and the frontrunners in the class executed this perfectly.
Ivan Ortola of Angeluss MTA Team secured the second position, trailing Masia by a mere 0.108 seconds. Meanwhile, Ayumu Sasaki, currently sitting in third place in the Championship, made a late surge to claim the third spot, much to the delight of the home crowd.
Daniel Holgado, who is tied on points with Masia in the title race, was in need of a strong performance after a challenging run of form. The Red Bull KTM Tech 3 rider found himself in fourth place, followed by Diogo Moreira (MT Helmets – MSI) and Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo), both prominent contenders in the championship battle.
Importantly, these riders have secured provisional Q2 places, offering some insurance should rain arrive on the morning of the race.
Stefano Nepa of Angeluss MTA Team, Kaito Toba of SIC58 Squadra Corse, and Jose Antonio Rueda of Red Bull KTM Ajo all comfortably placed themselves within the top 10.
Meanwhile, three Japanese riders, Ryusei Yamanaka (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team), Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia), and Tatsuki Suzuki (Leopard Racing), along with David Alonso (Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team), are in a precarious position if the weather remains clear on Saturday morning.
Collin Veijer of Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP faced disappointment, missing out on the Q2 spot due to a near highside incident. As the riders hope for favorable weather conditions, the Moto3™ category promises an exciting showdown at the Motul Grand Prix of Japan.
