James Key to replace Jan Monchaux as Alfa Romeo Sauber technical director
Posted : 07 June 2023
James Key, who was removed from his position as McLaren's technical director in March, is set to join the Alfa Romeo Sauber team in September as their new technical director. The 51-year-old Key will be taking over from Jan Monchaux as the head of the design department.
In the upcoming season, Sauber will no longer be associated with the Alfa Romeo brand, as they are transitioning to become Audi's factory team in 2026.
This strategic move marks a significant change for Sauber. Andreas Seidl, the CEO of Sauber, expressed that Key's appointment is a vital step in this transformation.
Key's return to the team where he previously served as deputy technical director from 2010 to 2012, before joining Red Bull's Toro Rosso team, reflects the confidence and trust that Seidl has in his technical leadership abilities.
Having joined McLaren in 2018, Key and Seidl had previously collaborated during Seidl's tenure as team principal at the British team from 2019 to 2022.
Seidl said Key "joins us to shape the future of this team".
"I am sure that, together with this very talented and committed team, we will be able to continue on the path of growth on which we have embarked” He said.
"James has an outstanding amount of experience in the sport, not just as technical director, but also in various other roles within the technical organisation of a team.
"He will lead the transformation process of the technical side of the team, giving us the tools and direction we need to tackle the future."
Audi hired Seidl to make sure the team is competitive when the German automaker debuts in Formula One under its own brand.
