Jake Dennis leads first Grand Slam in 2022/23 Formula E World Drivers' Championship

Posted : 17 July 2023
Jake Dennis of Avalanche Andretti showcased his dominance in the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Drivers' Championship, securing a stunning first Grand Slam of the GEN3 era in Round 14 in Rome. He achieved the Julius Baer Pole Position, TAG Heuer Fastest Lap, and the race win, leading from start to finish.

Dennis took advantage of his rivals' misfortune, as Mitch Evans of Jaguar TCS Racing and Nick Cassidy of Envision Racing collided on the second lap, allowing Dennis to extend his lead.

The Brit maintained a three-second gap to secure the first lights-to-flag victory of the GEN3 era, making him one of three drivers to achieve a Grand Slam in Formula E history.

With this victory, Dennis now holds a 24-point advantage over Cassidy heading into the season finale in London, where he aims to secure the championship. Meanwhile, Envision Racing leads the Teams' table by 13 points over TAG Heuer Porsche.

The race also saw Norman Nato of Nissan defending his position against Sam Bird of Jaguar TCS Racing, despite early damage to his front wing. The season's climax will feature two races in London on July 29 and 30.

In the opening turns, the top four drivers, Dennis, Cassidy, Nato, and Evans, remained unchanged. However, disaster struck for Cassidy and Evans on the run into Turn 7, impacting the battle for the Drivers' title. The Safety Car came out to clear the debris, and Evans eventually retired from the race due to the damage.

Throughout the race, Dennis and Nato made use of their mandatory 50kW ATTACK MODE boosts to maintain their positions, while Bird showed strength in energy management.

Despite challenges from Nato and Bird, Dennis managed to maintain his lead and take the victory. Cassidy fought to recover, earning points with a tenth-place finish.
